I write this in my capacity as the Executive Director, Nigerian Law Society (NLS).
In the year 2002, the popular singer Celine Dion sang the song entitled: "A New Day Has Come"!!!
Some of the lyrics are as follows:
"new day, ah-ah
A new day, ah-ah
I was waiting for so long
For a miracle to come
Everyone told me to be strong
Hold on and don't shed a tear
Through the darkness and good times
I knew I'd make it through
And the world thought I had it all
But I was waiting for you"
Both the lyrics and the upbeat melody of that song makes it one of my favourite feel good song when I feel like enjoying a celebratory dance!!!
Away from the prying eyes of the public, I would put this song on repeat and dance my heart away!!!
Today, I am in an upbeat celebratory mood.
It is one of those joyful moments in life which I call: "the joys of fatherhood" to watch something that you and others conceived and nurture take on a life of its own. Just like watching as a moth morphs into a beautiful butterfly, and spread its wings and fly!!!
Today, is one of those extremely exhilarating and exciting and celebratory days!!!
In my capacity as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Law Society (NLS), I am extremely excited to be part of the team that birthed an alternative option for right-thinking members of the Nigerian legal profession!!!
Right thinking members of the Nigerian legal profession who are tired and frustrated with the ALLEGEDLY rigged electoral system of the previously sole professional Association of Nigerian lawyers!!!
In the year 2023, in a public show of shame, the former President and Treasurer of this hitherto sole professional Association of Nigerian lawyers, engaged in a war of words about mismanagement of the funds of the said Association.
The YouTube video of that episode of reality show has garnered more than many Nollywood movies with over 266,000 views. You can watch it below.
Dr. Sam Amadi, a senior lawyer earlier described the said previously sole professional Association of lawyers as a "governmentalised" department of the government.
Months after his public statement, the headlines broke that the Rivers State Government of Governor Fubara had "given" ₦300,000,000 to the said hitherto sole professional Association of Nigerian lawyers.
In March 2025, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) delivered what can be regarded as the final nail to the coffin of the said hitherto sole professional Association of Nigerian lawyers.
In a public statement, the CJN cited the report of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to state that increasingly more Nigerian lawyers who are members of this hitherto sole professional Association of Nigerian lawyers are not complying with professional ethical standards anymore.
It is against this foregoing background that the Nigerian Law Society (NLS) is welcomed as "a new day that has come" to the Nigerian legal profession.
As a breath of fresh air, for Nigerian lawyers who had previously been suffocating with the stench of illegalities and unprofessional ethical behaviour that was condoned and even NORMALISED by the hitherto sole professional Association of Nigerian lawyers!!!
As part of the arrangements for the annual general conference of the Nigerian Law Society (NLS) elections for positions of Executive Council officers.
Both the annual general conference and the general elections are due to hold in July 2025 as a hybrid event.
Unlike the "do-or-die", heavily monetised elections of the hitherto sole professional Association of Nigerian lawyers, the Nigerian Law Society (NLS) is characterised by decency, decorum and the highest sense of professional ethics.
No Governor of any Nigerian State or other government officials or money bags is sponsoring any candidates!!!
Transparency in the electoral process is another important feature.
No scandals of financial misappropriation of funds of the Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has been levied against the current Executive Council members led by the President, Chief Mela Nunghe, SAN, Bencher.
We invite all RIGHT-THINKING NIGERIAN lawyers to register and witness "a new day has come to the Nigerian legal profession by clicking on the link below:
