Human Rights
The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) is committed to the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria. Our Human Rights Policy Agenda aims to promote respect for human rights and the rule of law, and to hold government and other actors accountable for human rights violations.
Our work in this area includes:
-
Advocacy and Reform: We advocate for legal and policy reforms that promote human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria. This includes advocating for the ratification and implementation of international human rights treaties and for reforms to domestic laws and policies that are inconsistent with international human rights standards.
-
Human Rights Monitoring: We monitor human rights violations in Nigeria and document cases of human rights abuses. This includes monitoring the conduct of law enforcement and security agencies, as well as the actions of government officials and other actors.
-
Legal Aid and Support: We provide legal aid and support to victims of human rights abuses in Nigeria. This includes providing legal representation, advice, and support to individuals and groups who have been affected by human rights violations.
-
Capacity Building: We work to build the capacity of legal practitioners, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to promote and protect human rights in Nigeria. This includes providing training, resources, and support to legal practitioners and civil society organizations.
-
Research and Advocacy: We conduct research and analysis on human rights issues in Nigeria, and we use this research to inform our advocacy and policy development work. We also engage in public education and awareness-raising activities to promote a better understanding of human rights issues among the Nigerian public.
At the Nigerian Law Society, we believe that respect for human rights is essential for the well-being and dignity of all Nigerians. We are committed to promoting and protecting human rights in Nigeria, and to holding government and other actors accountable for human rights violations.
