International law is the body of rules and principles that govern the relationships between states and other international actors. Nigeria has played an active role in shaping and contributing to the development of international law and the global legal order.
One of Nigeria's most significant contributions to international law is its role in the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Nigeria was one of the first African countries to ratify the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC, in 2001. Nigeria has also been a vocal supporter of the ICC's mandate to prosecute individuals responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
Nigeria has been a leading voice in the promotion of human rights and the rule of law at the international level. In 2018, Nigeria was elected to serve as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a three-year term. As a member of the UNHRC, Nigeria has been actively involved in addressing human rights violations and promoting the protection of human rights around the world.
Nigeria has also been a strong advocate for the peaceful settlement of disputes and the use of international law to resolve conflicts. Nigeria played a key role in the resolution of the Bakassi Peninsula dispute between Nigeria and Cameroon. The dispute was settled in 2006 through the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) judgment, which Nigeria accepted and implemented.
In recent years, Nigeria has been at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy and other forms of maritime crime in the Gulf of Guinea. Nigeria, along with other countries in the region, has signed several agreements and protocols aimed at improving maritime security and combating illegal activities at sea.
Nigeria's contributions to international law and the global legal order demonstrate its commitment to upholding the principles of the rule of law, human rights, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. As Nigeria continues to play an active role in the international community, it will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future development of international law and the global legal order.
